Elton’s Clarity

Listen to how clean each line is. No trembles, no harsh tone, no hard consonants. Nothing is distracting from the clarity of the melody. Not even the words.

Classical vs. Pop Technique

When I was a little girl I wanted to learn how to sing like my favorite artist: Billie Holiday.

I asked my mom for voice lessons and she brought me to a very nice old lady who quickly informed me that I was going to destroy my voice.

Instead she began teaching me classical technique with a few Italian arias.

I quickly quit and resumed my living-room education of listening to my mom’s albums. And I’m glad that I did.

Many voice teachers insist that pop music will ruin your voice. This is simply not true.

There is a correct way to belt out a high note. Proper belting feels effortless.

Don’t settle for the first voice teacher you see in the phone book. Find a teacher who specializes in the genre of music you want to sing. If there are none in your area, search outside your area. Voice teachers (including myself) often offer lessons online via Skype or a similar video-chat program.

If Brenda Lee and Etta James are still touring the world, you can certainly learn how to sing the music you like.

Neil Young- Tone on Highs

The song is in a moderately high range. Instead of using a loud belting tone he has a smooth, relaxed tone which is closer to falsetto.
